Are you overtraining?
Are you overreaching?
Do you even know what they are?
This is something a lot of fighters/athletes and even regular gym goers got brought without realising it has happened or why.
Fighters tend to push themselves over and over and SOME combat S&C coaches have been guilty in the past of beasting fighters to see how far they can go or to say “ I was the man that burst him/her”. and not take into account programming and recovery etc.
The definitions of each are
Definition of overtraining (Wikipedia.com)
Overtraining occurs when a person exceeds their body's ability to recover from strenuous exercise. Overtraining can be described as a point where a person may have a decrease in performance and plateauing
Definition of overtraining (Cambridge English dictionary)
to fail by trying to achieve, spend, or do more than you can manage
Some of the symptoms are as follows and again if you recognise a few of them please take stock of your training, speak to coaches, family, friends who will be honest with you in regard to the points you identify with, most coaches will be able to spot some of the signs and hopefully intervene at the early stages.
Even a well planned and executed programme can fall prey to overtraining/overreaching. This may be in part in not taking into account what the skills coaches have planned in the fighters programme.
As a coach I try my hardest to ensure that I am working alongside the Technical coaches so we are all singing off the same hymn sheet and have the fighters best interests at heart.
Symptoms include:
Loss of motivation
Overuse injuries.
Fatigue.
Reduced appetite and weight loss.
Irritability and agitation.
Persistent injuries or muscle pain.
Decline in performance.
Weight gain
Decreased immunity system or prolonged illnesses
